The Spanish giants agreed a fixed fee of well over $100 million with Borussia Dortmund in the summer of 2023 for the transfer of the English star.
While Jude Bellingham continues searching for the goal-scoring form he showcased upon his arrival at the Santiago Bernabéu last season, Real Madrid continue paying off his transfer. Although the deal was officially valued at €103 million (c.$112m), the total figure could reach €133.9 million (c.$145m) if the conditions stipulated in the agreement with Borussia Dortmund are met.
“If it had only been €103 million, we would have negotiated poorly. It was quite a bit more,” said Borussia Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke in an interview with AS. Additionally, the Frankfurt Stock Exchange, where the German club is listed, confirmed the transfer figures. While the exact details of the variable clauses were not disclosed, an estimate can be made of what Madrid has paid and may still owe for the English midfielder.
Real Madrid’s outstanding balance with Dortmund
According to German outlet Sport Bild, of the €30.9 million in variable fees, €25 million (c.$27m) are considered “very likely to be paid” by Real Madrid. These bonuses depend on both team and individual objectives.
On the team side, Madrid will owe more if they win titles such as LaLiga or the Champions League, or if they qualify for the latter over the next six years – the period covered by Bellingham’s contract, which runs until 2029. In fact, according to the same source, Madrid’s recent triumphs in LaLiga and the Champions League have already triggered an additional €10 million payment.

Bellingham’s prominence and performance on the field could also increase the cost of his transfer.
One key factor is the importance of the English midfielder in Carlo Ancelotti’s plans, specifically the number of minutes and matches he plays. This is the easiest clause to meet, but it’s not the only one. There are also performance-based clauses. For example, Dortmund would receive an additional payment if Bellingham is selected for the FIFA The Best Team of the Year.
Additionally, another significant clause is tied to individual honours. If Bellingham wins the prestigious Ballon d’Or, Real Madrid would have to pay an extra €8 million to the German club. Currently, Bellingham is competing for that award alongside teammates like Vinicius Júnior and Dani Carvajal, as well as Rodri from Manchester City.
