The Dutch football association (KNVB) have suspended FC Groningen goalkeeper Etienne Vaessen following a post-match scuffle after the game against Ajax.
After the game of May 14th against Ajax ended in a 2-2 draw, Vaessen lunged into a scuffle with Ajax players and staffers before allegedly throwing punches at former Ajax assistant Felipe Sanchez Mateos, which the KNVB called a "violent act."
The case was soon picked up by the prosecutor of the KNVB, as well as the case of Ajax defender Ahmetcan Kaplan, who allegedly didn't hold back either in confrontations.
The KNVB announced on Wednesday that Vaessen would receive a four-game suspension, three of which are unconditional. FC Groningen and Vaessen accepted the settlement offer from the KNVB, which means Vaessen will miss the first three games of the new season. Kaplan's case was dismissed.
The Surinamese international has commented on his suspension via a story on Instagram. "Apologies for my behaviour after the game," wrote Vaessen. "(There were) several factors why I reacted in the way I did, but that doesn't matter now! As a professional footballer, you're a role model. Let's draw a line under it and move on!"
