Real Madrid are sweating on the fitness of striker Karim Benzema ahead of their crucial Champions League clash with Paris Saint-Germain.

The Real captain has been key to the club's league and European success this season, scoring 24 goals across 28 appearances in all competitions.

However, the 34-year-old has not played since leaving the field against Elche with a hamstring injury in January, and has already missed their Copa del Rey defeat by Athletic Bilbao.

And according to L'Equipe, the player's recovery has not been as swift as the club would have hoped, with it now a real possiblity that Benzema will miss the first leg of their Round of 16 clash next Tuesday.

The French publication has revealed the player has only been able to return to light training this week, and is likely not to be risked against Villarreal in LaLiga this weekend.

A Real source told the paper that 'it is unknown' whether Benzema will be fit to return midweek.

The striker still has over a year to run on his contract at the Bernabeu, however it is reported he has sought assurances from the club's board over his future.

Despite his role as talisman at the club, Real have made no secret of their desire to bolster their attacking line up, with moves for both Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland expected in the summer.
