Kelleher, the forward turned goalkeeper who Klopp fell in love with: He is the best number two in the world

Caoimhin Kelleher was Liverpool's unlikely hero in the Carabao Cup final on Sunday, as he made a series of crucial saves during the 120 minutes of action before scoring a penalty in the shootout that the Reds eventually won.

His chances in the first team have been few and far between due to the presence of Alisson in the Liverpool goal, but Jurgen Klopp has trusted the 23-year-old Irishman in the League Cup this season and has fully repaid that faith.

Klopp decided to stick with Kelleher for the final ahead of Alisson, and after the game explained that it was a sentimental choice.

"Even in professional football there should be space for some sentiment," Klopp said.

"Caoimhin Kelleher is a young boy, plays in all the competition, what do I do?

"I am two things, a professional manager and a human being and the human being won. He deserves it.

"At the training centre we have a wall that all goalkeepers are on who won something and Caoimhin can go on it - that's how it should be - absolutely great.

"I am happy for the people to celebrate something like this."

He then went on to describe him as the best backup goalkeeper in the world.

"I've only known him for four years? He's come a long way from the first time I saw him as a boy to the man he is today.

"Alisson is the best goalkeeper but, for me, Caoimhin is the best number two in the world, especially the way we played.

"He made two amazing saves and then in the shoot-out he not only showed his full range of skills... even shooting. He's absolutely crazy!"
