Joan Laporta is facing a crisis at Barcelona just one week after being elected as the club's president, with the news that his financial vice-president Jaume Giro has resigned.

According to Marca, Giro has resigned over a disagreement with Laporta about his position on the board, with Giro wanting to be president of the club's finances.

His resignation has left Laporta in a difficult situation, with Laporta requiring his board to make up 15 per cent of the club's budget - thought to be around £107million - in order to be sworn in.

Giro is a former executive of Fundacio Caixabank and contributed a large amount of money to Laporta's new board.

Laporta won two Champions Leagues and four leagues when he was president between 2003 and 2010, and the club won an incredible six trophies back in 2009. He won 54 per cent of the 55,611 votes the second time around.

One of the priorities for Laporta is to convince Lionel Messi to stay at the club for the rest of his career, and Messi is believed to have voted for the 58-year-old lawyer.

But he's returned to a club with £1billion euros of debt, and the search will now be on to bring someone on to the board who can alleviate some of that debt.

His appointment comes at a tricky time on the field too. While they're in a good run of form in La Liga, they suffered their earliest Champions League exit for 15 years thanks to a 5-2 aggregate defeat to Paris St Germain.
