Match Report

Leicester City have been relegated from the Premier League after Trent Alexander-Arnold secured Liverpool a 1-0 victory at the King Power Stadium.

The right-back made a quick impact on his return from injury to move Liverpool within one win of clinching the title.

Mohamed Salah struck both posts within three minutes, as his shot rolled along the goal line, before Wilfred Ndidi also hit the woodwork at the other end.

Mads Hermansen was in fine form in Leicester's goal, making great saves to deny Salah, Cody Gakpo and Kostas Tsimikas as Liverpool upped the pressure.

However, it was the Foxes who thought they had opened the scoring in the 67th minute when Conor Coady headed into an empty net from close range, but it was disallowed for a foul on Alisson by Patson Daka.

Salah and Diogo Jota then both hit the woodwork in a chaotic build-up to the winner before Alexander-Arnold's powerful volley finally beat Hermansen nine minutes later.

Liverpool restored their 13-point lead over Arsenal, who could hand them the title if they lose to Crystal Palace on Wednesday. If not, they can clinch it with a win over Tottenham next Sunday.

Leicester are relegated with five games to spare, sitting 19th with 18 points, unable to catch 17th-placed West Ham.

Data Debrief: Down and out

Leicester have been relegated from the Premier League for the fifth time (1994-95, 2001-02, 2003-04, 2022-23 and 2024-25), with only Norwich City (six) ever suffering more relegations (West Brom also five).

While they put up a good fight on Sunday, they were unable to end their torrid run as they became the first team in top-flight history to go nine consecutive home league games without scoring.

It was also the first league match at the King Power in which they have failed to land a shot on target since February 2023 (0 v Arsenal).

As for Liverpool, they picked up their 24th win of the Premier League campaign, only recording more through 33 games of a top-flight season on two previous occasions (25 in 2018-19 and 29 in 2019-20).

Alexander-Arnold had the final day, and is the first defender to come on as a substitute and score the winning goal for Liverpool in a Premier League match since Martin Skrtel in August 2011 v Bolton Wanderers.
