"The shirt will be retired and have an owner for eternity, a footballing legend who we were lucky enough to have as part of our family" stated the club president.

President of Spanish second division side Extremadura UD, Manuel Franganillo has confirmed that the No. 19 shirt will be retired as a mark of respect for José Antonio Reyes. The former Spanish international died tragically yesterday in a car crash close to his native Seville.

"The number 19 shirt will now have an owner for eternity, a footballing legend who we were fortunate to have as part of our family", stated Franganillo in an open communique on behalf of the club.

He added that he "wanted, on behalf of all Extremadura fans to send his sincere wishes to the family of the player who are suffering in this time of tragedy".

Reyes joined the Spanish side in January 2019 after a brief spell with Xinjiang Tianshan Leopard F.C. in the Chinese second tier. Reyes was capped on 21 occasions by Spain and enjoyed a club career that saw him play for the likes of Sevilla, Arsenal, Benfica, Atletico Madrid, Espanyol and  Cordoba.
