  /  R47

Cody Gakpo scored his first Liverpool goal as the Reds returned to winning ways in the Merseyside derby to leave Everton rooted in the relegation zone.

2022/2023 Premier League

2-0

Mohamed Salah fired Jurgen Klopp's side ahead after a blistering counter-attack moments after James Tarkowski headed against the post at the other end.

Liverpool sealed the points when Gakpo - who joined from PSV Eindhoven last month - scored from close range.

Everton stay 18th in the table, one point from safety.

Liverpool's first league win of 2023 lifts them above Chelsea into ninth, nine points off fourth-placed Newcastle who they visit on Saturday (17:30 GMT).

This was a much-needed win for Klopp and his players after poor league defeats to Brentford, Brighton and Wolves in January as well as an FA Cup exit at Brighton.
