Liverpool have agreed a one-year contract with veteran goalkeeper Andy Lonergan, according to the Liverpool Echo .

The 35-year-old is set to sign the deal and could be on the bench for Wednesday's UEFA Super Cup match against Premier League rivals Chelsea in Istanbul.

Lonergan linked up with Liverpool for their US tour in the summer with No.1 stopper Alisson still enjoying a break following his involvement with Brazil at the Copa America, and youngsters Caoimhin Kelleher and Vitezslav Jaros both injured.

With Mignolet leaving Anfield for Club Brugge last week, new No.2 stopper Adrian is now set for a run in the team having replaced Alisson against the Canaries.

Trent Alexander-Arnold has backed the former West Ham gloveman to succeed over the next few weeks.

"[His experience] is the main thing, he knows what he is doing. He's played a load of games, so he knows what it is about," the 20-year-old told the Evening Standard.

“The reception he got [on Friday], I think he feels as though the supporters are already behind him.

“Obviously when a keeper has to come off, it's never too promising, so yes, I think everyone needs to get their head around [the fact] that he probably will be our keeper for the next few weeks and if so, then we have to live with that, embrace that and I'm sure he will learn from us.
