Liverpool agree record fee to sign Alexander Isak from Newcastle

Liverpool have agreed a Premier League-record fee with Newcastle United for Alexander Isak, multiple outlets in the UK report.

Isak has been a focus of transfer speculation throughout the summer, despite Newcastle’s insistence that he would not be allowed to leave. Finally, with less than 24 hours of the transfer window to go, their resolve has been broken.

The Athletic reports that Liverpool have agreed a deal worth £130 million ($176m) to Newcastle, a new English soccer record. Isak is now set to undergo a medical on Merseyside on Monday before officially signing.

Earlier in the summer Newcastle rejected an offer of £110 million from Liverpool. But Isak has stayed away from team practice and has not featured in any of the team’s first three Premier League fixtures.

A strongly-worded statement on Isak’s social media account seemed to suggest that the breakdown between player and club was irreparable. Liverpool have increased their offer and now look to have secured the services of Isak, who scored 27 goals for Newcastle last season and fired the team to its first trophy since 1955.

Isak is set to join a Liverpool team that are reigning champions and have started the new season with three wins out of three, putting them top of the league. The Reds have already strengthened with the likes of Florian Wirtz, Milos Kerkez, Jeremie Frimpong and Hugo Ekitike. The arrival of Isak will reiterate their status as Premier League favorites.
