Liverpool could be set for a surprising transfer boost if Tottenham striker Harry Kane completes a move to Manchester City.
With Spurs appearing to be as far away from winning a trophy as ever, Kane has made it clear to the Premier League side that he wants to leave in this summer’s transfer window.
The England captain remains arguably the best striker in the top-flight, having won another golden boot award in the season just gone.
But that individual success has not yet resulted in silverware, with Kane now ready to leave Tottenham in order to compete for major trophies.
The frontrunners to sign him are City, with the reigning Premier League champions one of the few clubs who would be able to afford Kane’s astronomical price tag.
With three years still left on his current contract, it could take a fee of more than £150million to convince Spurs to sell.
If Tottenham did sell their captain, they would almost certainly need to bring in a new striker to replace him.
One player who could fill the gap that Kane would leave is Danny Ings, who has reportedly turned down a lucrative new deal at Southampton.
According to The Athletic, the Saints offered Ings a four-year deal which would have made him the highest-paid player in their history.
That contract remains on the table, but the Englishman is believed to be unlikely to put pen to paper to stay at St Mary’s Stadium.
Instead, it is stated that Ings wants to test himself at a higher level, having scored 43 goals in the Premier League across the last three seasons.
The Athletic also report that Tottenham are one of the clubs to have held a long-time interest in the Englishman and have even tried to buy him in the past.
Manchester United have also been keen on signing Ings and are also believed to be in the market for a new striker.
Though they saw Edinson Cavani sign a new contract to stay at Old Trafford for at least another season, there remains a clear lack of a back-up in case he gets injured.
If City do sign Kane, that could be enough to turn the Red Devils towards Southampton star Ings, who would be far cheaper than Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Haaland.
Perhaps the only so-called ‘Big Six’ club not making a new striker one of their priorities for this summer’s transfer window is Liverpool.
But they are also connected to the Kane-Ings transfer saga, thanks to the sell-on clause they negotiated when they sold the latter to Southampton.
According to the Liverpool Echo, the Reds inserted a 20 per cent sell-on clause into the deal when Ings moved to the South Coast in the summer of 2019.
While Southampton are said to be happy to let his contract run until next summer, if a suitable bid does come in, Liverpool could be set to receive a boost of their own.
