Liverpool defeat Gerrard's Aston Villa on legend's return to Anfield

Steven Gerrard was back involved in a football match at Anfield, 2015 years after his final game there as a player. The coach took his Aston Villa side to his former home and they held on for the first hour, before eventually losing 1-0 to a Mohamed Salah penalty.

Liverpool dominated the match throughout, with Andy Robertson and Salah having the best of their chances in the first half. The Reds also wanted a penalty when Marvelous Nakamba challenged Robertson in the area, but that was waved away.

In the second half, though, Liverpool did win a spot kick when Tyrone Mings got tangled up with Salah, before the Egyptian stepped up and converted himself to make it 1-0 in the 67th minute.

Aston Villa pushed for an equaliser, but Liverpool actually came closer to scoring another. They had one really good chance, but Sadio Mane, Diogo Jota and Salah wasted a good counter-attacking opportunity.

It didn't matter, though, as Liverpool earned the three points to stay second in the table, behind Manchester City and ahead of Chelsea.
