Liverpool told to swap Mo Salah and Darwin Nunez for two Premier League stars

Mohamed Salah and Darwin Nunez both face uncertain futures at Liverpool and one of the club's former frontmen has picked out a pair of potential replacements for the duo.

Former Liverpool striker Michael Owen has urged the club to look within the Premier League for replacements for Mohamed Salah and Darwin Nunez. Salah's contract is up in the summer, while misfiring frontman Nunez has been linked with a move to the Saudi Pro League.

The two players picked out as replacements by Owen are Newcastle star Alexander Isak and Bournemouth frontman Antoine Semenyo. Isak has been mentioned previously in connection with the Reds, while Semenyo has caught the eye with his Cherries form this term.

London-born Ghana international Semenyo, 25, has nine goals and five assists in all competitions this term. It's a career-best return for the forward, who joined from Bristol City in January 2023.

Isak, another 25-year-old is also closing in on a career-best season. The Sweden international has 23 club goals in all competitions, just two shy of his return last season.

The Newcastle frontman also scored four times in as many UEFA Nations League matches in the autumn. However, he drew a blank as Sweden suffered a friendly defeat to Luxembourg in their last international fixture.

"There's been a few rumours lately about different players," Owen told OLBG. "Alexander Isak, obviously, at Newcastle who scored against them the other day, that would just be an incredible move if Liverpool could get him, but I'm sure virtually every team wants him and I'm sure Newcastle are desperate to keep hold of him, so that would be an interesting one.

"I like Antoine Semenyo at Bournemouth, who plays in the same position as Salah. I like him, a younger version, but definitely got energy, scoring capabilities and a good player. That being said, you can't replace Mo Salah.

"I mean if you said Mo Salah and Darwin Nunez went and Alexandr Isak and Antoine Semenyo came then I don't think it's the worst swap in the world if we're playing fantasy football here, but realistically Liverpool want to keep hold of their best players and Mo Salah is their best player so hopefully he doesn't leave."

While Owen has pointed Liverpool towards Isak and Semenyo, his former England team-mate Alan Shearer has different ideas. The Match of the Day pundit has urged the Reds to sign Liam Delap, who is in danger of relegation with Ipswich Town.

"Liverpool are going to need a centre-forward," Shearer said on The Rest Is Football podcast. "They might try and move Nunez on and bring someone else into that position. There will be big football clubs after Delap I’m sure of that."
