Luis Enrique says PSG expectations raised by 'impossible, stratospheric' treble win

  /  autty

Luis Enrique believes expectations surrounding Paris Saint-Germain have gone through the roof since their "stratospheric" 2024-25 campaign, saying they cannot win every game 5-0.

PSG won the Champions League for the first time last season, beating Inter 5-0 in the final, as well as winning a fourth Ligue 1 title in a row and lifting the Coupe de France.

By adding the Trophee des Champions, UEFA Super Cup and Intercontinental Cup to their cabinet, they became only the second top-tier European team to win six trophies in a single calendar year, after Barcelona in 2009.

PSG's standards have dipped ever so slightly this campaign, as they failed to achieve automatic qualification for the last 16 of the Champions League and must face domestic rivals Monaco in a play-off tie in February.

They are also second in Ligue 1 ahead of Sunday's trip to Strasbourg, albeit with a game in hand on leaders Lens, who defeated Le Havre 1-0 on Friday to jump to the summit.

Asked if he felt PSG had taken a step backwards on Saturday, Luis Enrique told reporters: "I'm going to make a little reflection. You think we have to win every game 3-0 or 5-0, like we did last season.

"But that is not normal, that's impossible, it was stratospheric. Expectations are higher now. We want to make history, and it's not easy.

"In each Champions League match, we have met very high-level opponents. I am optimistic.

"But we can't win every game 3-0. It's impossible, you have to know that! We continue to want to make history."

Lens coach Pierre Sage said after Friday's win that his team were keeping PSG under pressure, but Luis Enrique is not running away from that challenge.

"What has changed compared to last season is Lens. They are different. The rest is business as usual. I like the pressure," the Spaniard added.

"If they want to put us under pressure, I like that. We are used to having this type of pressure. We have to show tomorrow that we like this pressure."

Strasbourg have won their last two Ligue 1 matches (2-1 against Metz, 4-1 at Lille) since Gary O'Neil replaced Liam Rosenior as head coach.

That is as many victories as they managed in their previous 10 games in the competition (three draws, five losses), and they are just two points adrift of the top five in seventh place.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Strasbourg – Valentin Barco

Strasbourg have made the third-most passes in Ligue 1 this season (9,954), only behind PSG (14,013) and Marseille (11,176).

Former Brighton man Barco has impressed in a holding midfield role for the hosts, with only Mamadou Sarr (904) completing more passes than his 812 for them in Ligue 1 this season.

Paris Saint-Germain – Vitinha

Vitinha is the only player to have made 200+ line-breaking passes in Ligue 1 this season, having made 111 more than any other player (303, 192 for second-placed Moussa Niakhate).

MATCH PREDICTION: PARIS SAINT-GERMAIN WIN

Strasbourg have lost 53% of their Ligue 1 matches against PSG in their history (36/68), more than they have against any other team in the competition.

However, Strasbourg have won their last three home matches in all competitions, though they have not won four in a row at the Stade de la Meinau since doing so between September and November 2019.

O'Neil could become only the second manager in Strasbourg's history to win his first three games in charge in Ligue 1, after Robert Jonquet won his first four in December 1961 and January 1962.

But PSG are, as one would expect, overwhelming favourites. They have won their last two away games in Ligue 1, having only won two of their previous six (D2 L2).

And overall, the champions are on a five-match winning streak in Ligue 1 – their best run of the campaign.
