Luis Suarez has scooped his first trophy since returning to boyhood club Nacional - lifting the Primera Divison title after playing just ten games - which comes 16 years after he first won the competition at the start of his career.

Suarez rejoined the club in the summer midway through their league campaign and has scored four goals so far, and he already has silverware to mark his reunion after a 2-1 win over Cerrito sealed their success.

The veteran started the game and played the full 90 minutes, though he wasn't able to get on the scoresheet as Franco Rosa and Felipe Carballo grabbed the goals - before Julian Perujo made it a nervy finish two minutes from time.

Suarez has now won 20 trophies in his glittering career - including the Eredivisie at Ajax, the League Cup at Liverpool and LaLiga and the Champions League at Barcelona.

And this one will be particularly special for the 35-year-old, given it brings him full circle having won the trophy as a teenager with Nacional in the 2005-06 campaign.

After the final whistle, Suarez was seen lifting up the cup in his tracksuit jacket with his winners' medal around his neck.

He then ran over to the fans and hoisted it up in front of the stand before celebrating with his wife, Sofia Balbi.

Nacional won the title by four points, having pipped their rivals River Plate and Maldonado. Ironically, they also saw off compeition from a club named Liverpool.

Suarez, who has played 134 times for the Uruguayan national side and will feature at this year's World Cup, is now expected to leave the club before linking up with his team-mates in Qatar.

Nacional's president said it was always agreed that Suarez would join the club on a short-term deal, with the player now able to bow out on a high.

'When the Uruguayan Championship ends, Suarez will leave, that's how we arranged his deal', as quoted by ESPN.

'It's what we agreed and he made a huge effort to come here.

'I say this to avoid generating fan expectations. Suarez is leaving. We've asked him, and he answered the same thing as before.'

Suarez returned to his home country this summer having left Atletico Madrid, where he won LaLiga for the fifth time in the 2021-22 season.
