MLS side set to break the transfer market with world-class attacker

It’s true that Inter Miami opened the door for a new era in MLS with the arrivals of Lionel Messi, Luis Suárez, Sergio Busquets, Jordi Alba, and now Rodrigo De Paul. However, LAFC hasn’t been far behind. In that time, they’ve brought in names like Hugo Lloris and Olivier Giroud (who has since left), while also maximizing the impact of Denis Bouanga, who has drawn interest from several clubs.

Now, LAFC are preparing to welcome Heung-Min Son from Tottenham Hotspur, where he enjoyed a brilliant spell and managed to say goodbye with a long-awaited trophy—arguably the club’s biggest unfulfilled goal until then.

LAFC are coming off their most recent appearance in the FIFA Club World Cup, though their campaign was a disappointment. They’re now aiming to turn the page and build on the experience. In the Leagues Cup, they’ve struggled, failing to collect even three points in their first two matches. Meanwhile, in MLS play, they currently sit sixth in the Western Conference, with 36 points from 22 matches. As the final stretch of the season approaches, they’re looking to make a strong push.

It’s clear that Son will bring tremendous value to both LAFC and an MLS that continues to grow by attracting world-class talent. Just as Rodrigo De Paul recently left Atlético de Madrid to join Inter Miami, Son is now leaving Tottenham to start a new chapter in the United States. If there’s one quality that has defined Son throughout his career, it’s discipline—making him an excellent addition from day one.

According to Tom Bogert, Son’s transfer will be historic—the most expensive in MLS history—with LAFC paying nearly $27 million. The current record belongs to Emmanuel Latte Lath’s $22 million move to Atlanta United. Bogert also reports that Son is already en route to Los Angeles for his medical.
