Real Madrid’s new signing Brahim Diaz supported Barcelona as a child and idolised Lionel Messi.

Diaz joined Real Madrid from Manchester City on Monday in a £21m transfer.

The deal saw Diaz sign a contract at the Bernabeu until 2025.

The 19-year-old said upon his unveiling that his dream was "playing for Real Madrid, playing for Real Madrid and playing for Real Madrid.”

But it appears as though Diaz had other loyalties in the past.

In an interview unearthed by Spanish newspaper La Sexta, Diaz was interviewed as a child in 2011 when he was asked about his club loyalties.

And the then-youngster told interviewer Quim Domenech that Barcelona was his dream side.

“Which team do you like the most: Barca or Madrid?” Domenech asked.

Diaz replied with a smile: “Barca.”

Domenech then said: “Who is your idol, the player that you like the most?”

“Messi,” was Diaz’s reply.

Domenech then asked: “Messi? Do you compare to him?”

To which Diaz said: “Well, I do not care but if I'm (like) Messi, that’s very good.”
