Match Report
Knowing that only a win would do, the crowd inside the Estadi Mallorca Son Moix grew increasingly nervous after a slow start from the hosts.
In fact, they almost got off to a disastrous start when David Carmo found space in the six-yard box, but he didn’t connect properly with the header.
If anything, that ignited something in Mallorca, as they took the game to the visitors with their attacking efforts spearheaded by Takuma Asano and Vedat Muriqi.
Asano had the first real chance of the game for the home side after bursting clear on the right wing, but his driven effort across goal evaded the far post.
Muriqi was next to threaten and should’ve done better with a header after being left unmarked, but he powered it straight at Horatiu Moldovan, who made the save.
With news filtering through that results elsewhere were going against them, the home crowd was given something to cheer about with the opener just before half-time.
Pablo Maffeo’s deep cross looked like it was potentially overhit, but Pablo Torre kept the attack alive with a perfectly timed run before a cushioned first-time volley gave Los Piratas the lead.
With their fate out of their hands, the home crowd became increasingly glued to their phones as they followed other games.
On the pitch, Mallorca almost doubled their lead on 55 minutes, but Sergi Darder’s deflected shot cracked the post before bobbling into the grateful arms of Moldovan.
In truth, the visitors did little to trouble Leo Roman, but the three points were secured on 83 minutes when Manu Morlanes drilled a volley into the ground, which looped into the top corner to make it 2-0.
Some gloss was added to the scoreline on 88 minutes when Muriqi crashed the ball in from close range, ending an impressive individual campaign on 23 La Liga goals.
Despite the three points, Mallorca find themselves relegated in 18th position, losing out on the tie-breaker with Osasuna and Levante, who also finished on 42 points. Real Oviedo were officially relegated on gameweek 35, but also ended the season at the foot of the table following a seven-game winless run.
