Manchester United were dealt a double defensive injury blow as they meekly surrendered a two-goal lead against Sevilla tonight.
Late own goals by Tyrell Malacia and Harry Maguire mean United have work to do if they are to progress to the Europa League semi-finals in Spain next week.
But of bigger concern was an emotional Lisandro Martinez leaving on a stretcher, while central defensive partner Raphael Varane was earlier forced off.
It leaves Erik ten Hag with significant problems before Sunday’s trip to Nottingham Forest and the remainder of the campaign.
‘There was no opponent involved with Martinez, so it doesn't look great,’ Ten Hag said. ‘But we still have to wait and see, the same with Varane. It was not the Achilles. I don’t know what area. I can’t give the diagnosis.
‘We’re competing in three competitions and you need the squad. If he’s not available then others have to do it. On Saturday Maguire came in and played a good game; the same tonight. We have very good replacements with Maguire, [Victor] Lindelof and [Luke] Shaw.’
Ten Hag was left to defend his substitutions – taking off Anthony Martial, Bruno Fernandes and Antony before United lost the ascendency.
‘I had to make them,’ he added. ‘There was no other way. With Bruno I got a warning from the referee about the second booking and the same with Antony. I had no other choice.
‘We had to score the third goal. The last 10 minutes everything was against us. We switched off with the first. Then the injury. Both were really unlucky goals. What can you do? Sometimes you have bad days and bad luck. It was not our night.’
Fernandes’s caution means he will now miss the second leg through suspension, although Ten Hag did not rule out Marcus Rashford making a surprisingly quick comeback from a groin injury.
Marcel Sabitzer, who netted both of United’s early goals, branded the defending for Sevilla’s comeback as ‘stupid’ and questioned the side’s mentality.
‘I have problems finding the right words,’ Sabitzer said. ‘It was like a rollercoaster game. We had to finish the game off and at the end it's a draw and it's not what we wanted.
‘We had the chances. We controlled the game but unfortunately we gave easy goals away. We cannot concede these kinds of goals and we're really disappointed now.
‘In a competition like this you have to be focused until the end. The last minutes were a bit strange. Two stupid goals. That's not what we wanted. When you are 2-0 up at home you have to get it done.’
