Man United 'could offer Anthony Martial in exchange for Willian'

Manchester United are considering a late offer for Chelsea star Willian that would see Anthony Martial move in the opposite direction, according to reports on Sunday.

Both players are seeking a fresh challenge with Martial particularly keen to cut ties with Jose Mourinho after two turbulent years working together at Old Trafford.

As Chelsea value Willian at the same £75million that United place on Martial, The Mirror report that a straight swap deal could work out best for all parties involved.

Willian has already seen a dream move to Barcelona break down over Chelsea's high valuation. The Spanish club were prepared to go as high as £60m before talks ended and they opted to sign Bordeaux's Malcom instead.

But a reunion with Mourinho would be just as appealing for the Brazilian, who was one of the few sticking by the Special One as his final season at Chelsea crumbled around him.

The Portuguese has tried and failed to bring Willian to Old Trafford before, but the chance to give Chelsea a young and talented player like Martial may be the offer that Maurizio Sarri cannot refuse.

Mourinho has been keen to get rid of Martial following his decision to leave United's pre-season tour of the USA to witness the birth of his son, Swan.

While Mourinho claimed he never told Martial not to go, the Frenchman's decision not to return to the US following the birth has seen their relationship move to untenable grounds.

Similarly, Willian has irked new Chelsea manager Sarri by returning late from his summer holidays, citing an expired passport as the reason.

With the transfer window set to close on August 9, there remains little time to broker what would be a very complicated deal. Manchester United are already stretched for resources and are prioritising a new centre-back with Harry Maguire their top target.

Meanwhile, Chelsea are trying to cling on to key players Eden Hazard and Thibaut Courtois, both of whom are pushing for a move to Real Madrid.
