Match Reports
It gave the Red Devils a chance to catch up with North London rivals Arsenal and Tottenham ahead of them in the table.
Instead, however, the single point means that United remain three points adrift from Spurs, and five points off the Gunners, having played an additional two games.
Chelsea's domination
The visitors were on top for much of the game, with 67% possession and over 20 shots, but their finishing left much to be desired.
Of 21 shots, only three were on target, with Reece James hitting the post late on in the closest the Blues came to a winner.
The Blues had started the better team and had several early chances through James and Kai Havertz having chances in the first half.
Two minutes of madness
The tie came to life on the hour mark as James crossed the ball into the box for Havertz's to nod the ball on to Marcos Alonso, who powered a volley beyond David de Gea.
The home side reacted rapidly with a response in less than two minutes as Nemanja Matic intercepted Ngolo Kante's pass and played a ball over the top to Cristiano Ronaldo to score past Eduouard Mendy.
James' effort off the post was Chelsea's best chance, while United struggled to compete for all three points in the final moments, relying on set pieces and long balls into the final third.
