Kobbie Mainoo will miss the first part of the forthcoming season after the teenager's ankle injury during Manchester United's friendly defeat to Real Madrid.

The 18-year-old midfielder was injured during the friendly in Houston on Wednesday, and left the NRG Stadium in a protective boot.

Now the club have confirmed that Mainoo - who started four pre-season friendlies for Man United this summer - will have to sit out the start of the 2023/24 campaign following the setback.

The club's website revealed: 'Manchester United can confirm that Kobbie Mainoo suffered an ankle injury during the match against Real Madrid on Tour 2023.

'The midfielder is expected to be ruled out for the first part of the 2023/24 season.

'He has flown home from Tour to the UK where further assessment of his injury will take place before a medical decision on the next steps.'

On his Instagram, Mainoo shrugged off the disappointment, writing: 'I’ll be back stronger and in no time. Thanks for your messages of support.'

The injury occurred when his Man United colleague Casemiro tackled Real Madrid's Brazilian forward Rodrygo, who awkwardly landed on Mainoo's leg.

The midfielder was treated on the pitch, but could play no and further part in the game and limped off to be replaced by Christian Eriksen.

Mainoo made his senior club start last term in the League Cup against Charlton Athletic in January, before making his Premier League debut as a substitute against Leicester City the following month.

He was named the Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year for his work at Man United.

Manchester United have one more friendly in North America against Borussia Dortmund before returning. Their Premier League season begins with a home fixture against Wolves on August 14.
