Man Utd fail with remarkable transfer offer for Villa goalkeeper Emi Martinez

Manchester United made an approach to land goalkeeper Emi Martinez at the weekend - tabling a loan offer for the Aston Villa No.1 - but that was swiftly knocked back

Manchester United have seen a loan move for Emi Martinez quickly rejected by Aston Villa as the Red Devils look to address their goalkeeping problems.

Ruben Amorim has been linked with a move for the Argentina No.1, who helped his country win the World Cup on penalties three years ago, but his hopes of securing him on a temporary basis have been swotted away by those at Villa Park.

Martinez cut an emotional figure on his final home game last season, which saw many draw conclusions that he was set for pastures new. The ex- Arsenal goalkeeper has rejected the chance to move to Saudi Arabia this summer with Villa valuing him at £40million.

The Daily Mail reports that over the weekend discussions were held and the Manchester outfit put the idea of landing Martinez on loan to the Midlands outfit, who quickly made it clear that would not be happening.

The Villa goalkeeper's last outing ironically saw him sent-off at Old Trafford on the final day of the season. United were able to secure a 2-0 victory which meant that Unai Emery's side missed out on the Champions League, instead settling for the Europa League.

After that defeat Emery was quizzed on Martinez's future potential exit and said: “I don’t know. He has a contract with us. We are very happy and we will see how the summer goes.” Pressed on if there have been discussions over Martinez leaving, Emery added: “I don’t know. You can ask him.”

Doubts remain over Andre Onana, who is heading into his third season in Manchester, but he will miss pre-season with a hamstring injury and is in a race against time to be fit for the Premier League opener due to a torn hamstring. Amorim's side begin their season at home to Arsenal on August 17.

The Red Devils have been linked with Royal Antwerp goalkeeper Senne Lammens. The Belgian club have slapped a £17m price tag on the Belgian star amid interest from the Premier League giants. On Monday they finally announced the signing of Bryan Mbeumo after weeks on negotiating with Brentford.

He becomes the club's second summer signing, joining Matheus Cunha who headed to Manchester from Wolves. Mbeumo has cost United £71m, once add-ons are included, which makes him the most expensive player to ever leave the Bees as they maximised their profits.
