Manchester United have reportedly made contact with Dries Mertens to discuss a free transfer move next summer.
Inter Milan have been tipped to sign the Belgian playmaker at the end of the season.
But, according to TuttoMercatoWeb , the Red Devils and Borussia Dortmund are set to provide stern competition for his signature.
They claim United have already made contact with Mertens' representatives to discuss a potential deal, with the player free to talk to other clubs in January and sign a pre-contract agreement.
Inter remain the favourites to land Mertens, with Antonio Conte keen to bolster his attacking options and link up Romelu Lukaku with his Belgium team-mate.
Reports from Belgium claim Mertens is keen to stay in Italy, where he has scored 88 goals in 219 Serie A games since joining Napoli from PSG in 2013.
United are keen to add attacking reinforcements.
