Man Utd re-signed fan favourite in January transfers

  /  autty

The January transfer window is a tough time do business - but Manchester United have had their fair share of winter wins.

Ruben Amorim has already been busy during his first January window at Old Trafford after moving to sign defender Patrick Dorgu from Lecce. The Red Devils have also recruited 18-year-old Ayden Heaven from Premier League rivals Arsenal in a move that could pay dividends down the line.

And there's still time for United to accomplish more before Monday night's deadline, with the first half of the season not exactly going to plan. Amorim's side continue to be linked with strikers who could provide competition for Rasmus Hojlund, while a Marcus Rashford replacement could be on the cards after he joined Aston Villa on loan.

Whomever arrives at Old Trafford has some big examples to follow regarding United's previous January exploits, however. And Mirror Sport breaks down some of the club's finest mid-season additions from down the years.

Nemanja Vidic

Arguably one of the best January signings in Premier League history, Nemanja Vidic soared from obscurity at Spartak Moscow and became one of the best defenders the English top flight has ever seen. The Serb signed for just £7million in January 2005 and won his first trophy with United after little more than a month, beating Wigan Athletic to lift that season's League Cup.

Vidic went on to win 15 trophies at Old Trafford, including five Premier League titles and the 2008 Champions League. And Sir Alex Ferguson's spared no expense when underlining just how reliable he considered the player, whose defensive partnership with Rio Ferdinand went down in club history.

"I always used to say Denis Irwin would give us eight or nine out of 10 every week, but he never got a mention when the praise was being given out," said the Scot in 2009. "We all knew the value of him, and it is very much the same with Vidic. He has been a fantastic performer for us."

Paul Scholes

There's hardly a United fan who doesn't hold club icon Paul Scholes in the highest of regards. But it's easy to forget he has the rare distinction of being a one-club man who technically joined his outfit more than once.

Scholes was 36 when he announced his first retirement as a player in the summer of 2011. But Ferguson felt his midfield pendulum had more to offer - and he was right.

The ginger magician re-signed midway through the 2011/12 campaign and scored four league goals in the second half of that season - the most he managed since 2006/07. United just missed out on the title as City famously clinched the crown on goal difference, and although Scholes believes it was a mistake, he stayed on to lift his 11th and final Premier League title in 2013.

Bruno Fernandes

The only member of this list still on the books at United, Bruno Fernandes ignored interest from other European big guns to sign in January 2020. And the former Sporting CP playmaker has succeeded in lifting the standards at the Theatre of Dreams, just as he did in Lisbon.

Some will say the jury is still out on whether Fernandes has justified the initial £47m paid for his services given an FA Cup and League is all they've lifted in the five years since he arrived. However, his 88 goals and 77 assists in 268 appearances for United (well over one goal contribution every other game) and the fact he was made captain in 2023 speaks volumes of his work.

Patrice Evra

Fan favourites don't get a lot more beloved than Patrice Evra, who supposedly snubbed interest from Arsenal, Liverpool and Real Madrid to join United. Five Premier League titles, one Champions League crown and 379 appearances later, the Frenchman had secured his spot as an Old Trafford icon.

Ferguson moved for Evra in January 2006 because of an injury crisis in defence at the time, but his £5.5m arrival soon looked like a steal. Evra soon ousted Gabriel Heinze from the left-back spot permanently and was named in the Premier League Team of the Season on three occasions.

Louis Saha

United legend Ferguson had a habit of snatching the Premier League's most reliable scorers from their competition, and Louis Saha's arrival in January 2004 was an example of just that. The Frenchman had bagged 15 goals for Fulham in the first half of that season and came in to help flesh out United's frontline force.

Saha's time at Old Trafford was marred by injuries, but he nonetheless grabbed a decent return of 42 goals and 16 assists in 124 appearances for United. One of Wayne Rooney's favourite strike partners, he gave United what was asked of him when fit and clinched two Premier League crowns, one League Cup and a Champions League winners' medal for troubles.
