Manchester United have made a move for Chelsea defender Kurt Zouma as Jose Mourinho looks to bolster his defensive options before Thursday's transfer deadline.
United are up against Everton, like they were for Barcelona defender Yerry Mina, according to French newspaper L'Equipe.
It has reported that the Toffees are interested in a loan deal while United are keen for a permanent transfer, although Chelsea are reluctant to sell to a rival.
United are eager to bring in a centre back and Mourinho has been left frustrated over the club's lack of new signings this summer.
Mourinho confirmed that he wanted two new players before the transfer window closes on August 9, but admitted that he only expects to get one at best at the end of July.
‘I would like to have two more players,’ said Mourinho. ‘I think I am not going to have two. I think it’s possible I am going to have one. It’s possible.
'And that one I gave a list to my club five names a few months ago, and I wait to see if it's possible to have one of these players.
‘If it's possible it's possible. If it is possible good, if it is not possible we keep fighting and working and believing in the players that we have.’
Everton have agreed a £28.5million fee for Mina after his talks with United stalled.
Zouma, who joined the Blues in 2014, made 37 appearances for Stoke on loan during their relegation from the Premier League last season.
