Former Real Madrid defender Marcelo has rejoined Fluminense in his native Brazil.

The left-back was a free agent after his contract at Olympiacos was terminated by mutual consent.

Marcelo, 34, told club media: 'It's even difficult to express the meaning that this moment represents for me.

'I've been dreaming of returning to my origins for many years, to the team that trained me and taught me what I know about football.'

The former Brazil international has signed a contract that will run until December 2024 with the option of a further year.

Marcelo previously played for Fluminense's youth team between 2002 and 2005 before representing them at senior level as he made 30 appearances, while he won the Campeonato Carioca and the Taca Rio.

After leaving Fluminense in 2007 he moved to Real Madrid and enjoyed a lengthy stay until 2022, playing over 500 times for the club.

During his time at Real Marcelo won six LaLiga titles, five Champions Leagues and two Copa del Reys as well as four FIFA Club World Cup.

On the international stage, Marcelo made 56 appearances for Brazil between 2006 and 2018. He was part of the squad that won the Confederations Cup in 2013.

Having departed Real at the end of last season, Marcelo moved to Olympiacos, but his spell at the Greek club didn't go as planned as he played just five times in the league, with suspension and injury not helping his cause.
