Marsch: Morocco is a "flawless" team; we deserve to reach the World Cup round of 16

On July 3, ahead of the match against Morocco, Canada head coach Marsch gave an interview.

Q: How do you view Morocco, and how important is this match ahead of the knockout stage?

We have just walked across the field and must commend all the ground maintenance teams. Every pitch is outstanding, and the quality and consistency are exceptional.

We are excited to reach this stage and face a strong team like Morocco. Morocco possess outstanding individual quality, a tightly organized structure, and a very fluid attacking style that fully leverages the players' characteristics.

They are very confident right now, and we know this will be a huge challenge. We must be at our best, or we will be eliminated and go home. No matter who the opponent is, it is equally unforgiving at this stage.

Q: Regarding striker Larin, what is his condition?

Larin is a team player. Although he is unhappy about not playing, he remains happy for the team.

We spoke with him this week, preparing him to be ready to step up whenever needed. His attitude is very professional; he will give everything for the team. Our entire team is like this—united, committed, and focused—which is why we have come this far.

Q: What will you say to yourself and the team five minutes before the match?

I think we might still discuss set pieces (laughs).

But more importantly, we need to "play the game, not the atmosphere." The stadium will be very noisy and intense, but we must stay focused.

Football is inherently simple: 11 against 11, the ball is still the same ball, and the pitch is still the same pitch.

We have already made a lot of history, and now we face a true "giant opponent," but we need to enjoy the game, stay focused, and give our all.

Q: How would you evaluate the team's current mindset?

A few days ago, Nash sent us a message in which he mentioned "the balance between tension and freedom." We must maintain discipline and structure while also letting loose, enjoying the game, and showcasing our abilities.

This becomes increasingly critical as we advance into the knockout rounds. We need to be organized, yet daring in attack.

Q: If you look back on this FIFA World Cup years from now, what would you say?

I hope I can say, "I gave it my all." So far, we have done that, but now we have entered the most crucial stage.

We have been together for six weeks, and the team is growing closer.

We know this experience is very significant for Canadian football, and we hope to continue making history and reach even greater heights.

Q: How do you evaluate the gap between your team and Morocco, and what are your goals?

We have shown the world that if we execute our tactics, we can beat any team. But we also know that even the slightest lapse can lead to defeat against any opponent.

This reality keeps us focused and on edge. We deserve to be in the round of 16, but we do not want to stop there.

Q: Will Morocco be affected by travel and physical exertion?

Theoretically, perhaps, but the energy and intensity they have shown suggest they will not be affected. We must assume they will play their best game of this FIFA World Cup; otherwise, we will make mistakes.

Q: What is your view on the statement that Morocco has "no weaknesses"?

That is indeed the case; they are very complete and have no apparent weaknesses. But we will not be afraid; we will accept the challenge and try to find opportunities through what we do well.

Q: How would you assess Morocco's playing style?

Their midfield is highly flexible, their attacking combinations are fluid, and their wings and center connect effectively. They also possess very strong set-piece abilities and players like Hakimi, who can attack like a striker.

But our defense has been very stable, which is the foundation of our system, and we will use that stability to counter them.

Q: Is this the biggest game of your coaching career?

That's a difficult question to answer. For the national team, it is certainly one of the most important matches.

More importantly, we must eliminate all distractions and focus solely on Morocco and on executing our tactics.
