Liverpool have made some brilliant bargain signings over the last couple of decades.
And that includes plenty of stars who came in on a free transfer.
Matip's recent performances and the fact he has now played more than 100 games for the Reds got us thinking - and for Sunday's Agenda video on the Blood Red Youtube channel, we put together a free transfer top five.
Top five Liverpool free transfers and why
1) James Milner
"Milner's the free transfer who has been there the longest. He's had the most responsibility, he's stepped up with big goals. He was there in Madrid, he's won the Champions League. He has delivered so many times and he gets better with age."
2) Gary McAllister
"Until last season, he was still No. 1. So many memories: the Barcelona penalty, the Everton winner. He was so vital for that run where Liverpool won the treble and qualified for the Champions League. Imagine if the Reds had him 10 years earlier."
3) Joel Matip
"He's been there long enough and he's won the Champions League. So far this season Van Dijk hasn't been at his best. Matip has outshone him at times. He is the man in possession of the shirt alongside Virgil, but he's made a proper claim to make it his own long-term."
4) Fabio Aurelio
"He's stepped up for some big moments in his Liverpool career. He was at the Arsenal game at the weekend and still has that connection with the fans. He was brilliant and had such a good left foot on him."
5) Maxi Rodriguez
"He wasn't there for the longest period but he was a quality player. He scored some memorable goals and we all remember his hat-tricks. And he's got one of the best chants heard at Anfield in the past decade."
Honourable mentions also went to Markus Babbel (who narrowly missed out on fifth spot), along with Kolo Toure, Bolo Zenden, Jari Litmanen, Robbie Fowler and Craig Bellamy.
