Mbappe's entourage defend Real Madrid star amid rift reports

Kylian Mbappe's team have dismissed criticism of the Real Madrid star after what they believe to be an "overinterpretation" of his actions.

The France striker has been sidelined since suffering a hamstring injury during Los Blancos' 1-1 draw with Real Betis on April 24.

Mbappe has enjoyed a strong campaign, scoring 41 goals and providing five assists (not including the Club World Cup).

He is the leading scorer in both LaLiga (24) and the Champions League (15) this season.

However, Mbappe has been criticised for taking trips to Paris and Sardinia while sidelined before returning to Madrid on Sunday.

Reports also suggested Mbappe had an argument with one of Madrid's coaching staff, but his entourage released a statement to AFP, insisting the forward is focused on making his return to fitness.

"Part of the criticism is based on an overinterpretation of elements related to a recovery period strictly supervised by the club, and does not reflect the reality of Kylian's commitment and daily work for the team," the statement said.

Madrid defeated Espanyol 2-0 on Sunday, keeping the title race going in LaLiga ahead of El Clasico this weekend.

Los Blancos coach Alvaro Arbeloa also came to the defence of Mbappe after that win.

"All the planning regarding the injured players is supervised by Real Madrid medical staff," Arbeloa said.

"They control when the players have to be at Valdebebas. In their free time, the players can do as they see fit.

"I don't doubt the commitment of any of my players."

Madrid must beat Barcelona this weekend to keep their very slim title hopes alive, while Mbappe is still a doubt for the clash.
