McTominay transfer call shows how close Manuel Ugarte is to Man Utd move

Manchester United's reluctance to accept a cut-price deal for Scott McTominay suggests any transfer for Manuel Ugarte is on hold - or potentially off altogether.

The Red Devils have been plotting their summer recruitment and have considered some changes in the middle of the park. McTominay enjoyed a promising season last term, being more prolific than ever, and has been the subject of bids in recent weeks.

United have stood firm regarding their valuation and turned down two offers from Fulham - the highest being £20million for their academy graduate. They want more if they are to part with the Scot but Fulham are now looking elsewhere, reports Sky Sports.

A potential McTominay sale may have helped fund a switch for Ugarte, but opting to keep the Scot in their ranks means they may not have the capital to pursue the PSG man - or they've accepted defeat in negotiations and want to keep McTominay to ensure they have sufficient resources.

The Parisians only signed Ugarte last summer from Sporting Lisbon - fending off Chelsea interest in the process. They spent just over £50m to land the Uruguayan and want to make a profit on that if they are to let him leave for pastures new.

Despite playing regularly in the French capital Ugarte could find his minutes cut over the coming months after PSG completed a deal for Benfica youngster Joao Neves, in a deal that could rise to £60m.

United are now having to consider alternative options in midfield if they want to rejig their personnel. Casemiro was expected to depart but finding a buyer has proved challenging whilst Kobbie Mainoo's emergence has already seen him become a guaranteed starter.

United boss Erik ten Hag has also confessed he doesn't want to lose McTominay. "We have very good players so there will always be an interest from other clubs," said the Dutchman. "When you score 10 goals in a season and also perform very good for Scotland, then there will be an interest.

"But we want to keep him because he is a very important player for our squad. What he can contribute, as we saw last season once we had our sixes available, he could play in a more advanced role and he is a highly interesting player for our team."
