Messi: 2026 World Cup will be special, I don't want to be the team's burden

In an interview with Sport, Messi discussed the topic of the 2026 World Cup hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Looking ahead, the World Cup is just around the corner, and I imagine everyone is feeling rather excited.

Messi: Yes, absolutely. This is a special World Cup. Representing your national team and competing in other major official tournaments is special in itself, particularly given the significance of the World Cup and the fact I've won it before. But, as I mentioned earlier, I don't want to be a burden on the team. I want to stay in good physical shape to ensure I can help the team and contribute. Our season differs from the European one. We'll have a pre-season, with several matches before the World Cup. We'll assess the situation daily to see if my physical condition is truly sufficient to reach the level I require for competition. Naturally, I recognise this is the World Cup – it's unique, the largest tournament in the world. So I am excited, but I'll take it step by step.
