Lionel Messi (38) recently announced his decision to extend his contract with Inter Miami, committing to the MLS club until 2028 after his previous deal was set to expire this December.

In an interview with NBC News, the Argentine legend revealed the reasons behind his choice, describing it as an easy decision.

I’ve always said I base my decisions on how I feel day by day — physically and mentally — to keep playing and remain part of this club. Honestly, I’ve felt great throughout the year. I’m happy living in Miami, and so is my family,” said the former Barcelona star, who is currently competing in the MLS playoffs with Inter Miami and recently received the Golden Boot award for being the league’s top scorer.

Messi signed his new deal at the Miami Freedom Park Stadium, which will become Inter Miami’s new home from 2026.

“Leo’s contract extension through 2028 is a tribute to our incredible city. We’re excited to write new chapters in our stadium, the Miami Freedom Park,” said club owner Jorge Mas.

“We brought the greatest player in history to our city. That shows not only our commitment to Miami, but also Leo’s commitment — to the city, the club, and to football itself,” added David Beckham, one of Inter Miami’s co-owners.
