1' Yellow Card! Gallardo booked

5' Ochoa makes a save to deny Sweden

Handball by Ochoa! The keeper makes a massive mistake as he darts out to the right of his box to collect a ball headed for Berg and steps out of the 18-yard area with it between his gloves. It will be a free-kick on the very edge for Sweden, on their left flank.

17' Vela almost opens the scoring for Mexico!

Vela! A plum chance for Mexico whistles by as the attacking midfielder sticks a wonderful throughball from Lozano wide at the left post from 16 yards out with just the keeper to beat. That could be costly, given that their chances so far have been at a premium.

18' Forsberg misses a rather easy chance

Now Forsberg misses as, meeting a wonderful Toivonen cross, he puts his header out at the left post from close range. The chances are mounting in the opening 20 minutes in Ekaterinburg.

30' VAR reviews Sweden's Chicharito handball claim

No penalty! It will be a corner as the referee deems that Hernandez has not handled the ball with intent. Sweden manager Andersson is furious, bellowing at the fourth official on the touchline, whilst on the pitch, Larsson - already on a yellow card - will not let it go with referee Pitana either.

31' Ochoa makes another good save!

45' Marcus Berg hits the sidenetting

50' GOAL! Mexico 0-1 Sweden (Augustinsson)

AUGUSTINSSON SCORES! SWEDEN LEAD 1-0! The left-back, unmarked 10 yards inside the Mexico box, catches Claesson's looped cross over the defence with a left-footed volley and puts it into the right corner despite Ochoa getting a hand to it. Sweden have the breakthrough!

62' Penalty Goal! Mexico 0-2 Sweden (Granqvist)

GRANQVIST MAKES IT 2-0 FOR SWEDEN! The captain steps up to take the penalty and, with little fanfare, blasts it into the top left corner. On the touchline, Jan Olof Andersson makes a small fist-pump. The Swedes are heading to the top of Group F as it stands.

74' OWN GOAL! Mexico 0-3 Sweden (E. Álvarez)

3-0 TO SWEDEN! It's a terrible own goal from Alvarez as he misses an attempted clearance and puts the ball into the back of his own net for an own goal. Mexico have been their own worst enemy in this second half; their hopes are hanging by a thread.

MATCH REPORT

Sweden secured a place in the last 16 of the World Cup by thumping Mexico 3-0 in a pulsating encounter in Ekaterinburg, while defending champions Germany were eliminated.

Janne Andersson's side reaped the rewards of a relentless attacking display to secure top spot in Group F, with Mexico following them through as runners-up after Germany's shock 2-0 defeat to South Korea.

There were no lingering effects of the embittering late 2-1 loss suffered to Germany last time out as Sweden went for the jugular from the off, though they were denied a penalty for a blatant handball by Javier Hernandez despite referee Nestor Pitana reviewing video footage.

The impressive Guillermo Ochoa kept Emil Forsberg and Marcus Berg out in the opening period, but Ludwig Augustinsson volleyed a deserved opener through the Mexico goalkeeper in the 50th minute.

Andreas Granqvist rifled home 12 minutes later, when Pitana pointed to the spot for Hector Moreno's challenge on Berg, the Mexico defender's booking ruling him out of the last 16.

Edson Alvarez inadvertently sent the ball into his own net as Sweden moved out of sight, but the silver lining for Mexico was that they advanced because of Germany's failure against South Korea - leaving the world champions bottom of the group.
