A round-up of Newcastle United headlines as Sandro Tonali's stance on copying Alexander Isak emerges and Jose Mourinho's secret message emerges
Newcastle United are still buzzing after their victory over Benfica in the Champions League. Eddie Howe's side enjoyed a night to remember at St James' Park as they produced a 3-0 win on Tuesday.
Anthony Gordon was the first to find the back of the net for the Magpies, connecting with a pass from Jacob Murphy. The England international has scored four goals in three Champions League matches, catching the eye of Benfica's manager Jose Mourinho.
Harvey Barnes added to Newcastle's tally in the second half with a superb brace off the bench. Notably, the Magpies managed to secure the win without the help of key midfielder Sandro Tonali, who remained on the bench throughout the match.
It has been revealed that Tonali extended his contract with the club during his lengthy suspension for betting offences. The Italian midfielder has become a crucial part of Newcastle's squad and reportedly sees his future with the club, unlike former teammate Alexander Isak.
The triumphant result against Benfica serves as excellent preparation for Newcastle's upcoming match against Fulham this Saturday. Here, Mirror Football takes a look at some of the latest headlines surrounding Newcastle.
Sandro Tonali to avoid Alexander Isak ploy
Upon joining from AC Milan, Tonali initially signed a five-year deal with Newcastle until 2028. However, it has now been reported that the club agreed to extend his contract following his suspension in October 2023, meaning his contract will now run until 2029, with an option for an additional year.
Newcastle's sporting director Ross Wilson is still set to discuss improved terms with Tonali's representatives, as the midfielder's stellar performances have caught the attention of several clubs since last season.
However, according to the Daily Mail, there's no sign that Tonali will follow in Alexander Isak's footsteps and push for a move if a new contract isn't agreed upon. The drama surrounding Isak's transfer to Liverpool was partly due to Wilson's predecessor, Paul Mitchell, not meeting the striker's demands.
It is suggested that Tonali wouldn't consider returning to Italy at this point in his career. The Italian international reportedly values how much his game has developed under Eddie Howe's guidance.
Jose Mourinho has Anthony Gordon message
Anthony Gordon is turning heads, not just among Newcastle fans but also rival managers. The 24-year-old has thrived in the Champions League spotlight this season, netting against Barcelona and bagging a double against Union SG before scoring first on Tuesday.
Gordon also set up Barnes' second goal, rounding off a successful night before being substituted for Anthony Elanga towards the end. After the final whistle, he was approached by Benfica boss Mourinho, who had some flattering words for the Newcastle forward.
"He said 'You are too much' which is a big compliment for me because as a kid he was my favourite manager in the world growing up," Gordon revealed after the match.
"It's quite weird because he was quite a defensive manager, but I just love the way even then, the bench was getting up. He really creates a team environment, it's like us against the world.
"I recognise that from my own game so it was a big compliment. It means an awful lot. Even if I didn't idolise him, a compliment from any coach at this level means a lot."
