Diogo Jota, a 28-year-old Portuguese Liverpool footballer, died early this morning in a traffic accident in the province of Zamora.
The accident occurred at kilometer 65 of the A-52 , towards Benavente, near the Zamora region of Sanabria.
The Liverpool player died when the vehicle he was traveling in with his brother André, a 26-year-old professional footballer from Penafiel, went off the road, causing a fire.
According to witnesses who called 112, the car was engulfed in flames, which also spread to nearby vegetation. Several sources suggest that one of the car's tires may have burst , causing it to leave the road and burst into flames.
He got married on June 22nd
Diogo Jota had just married his fiancée, Rute Cardoso , just 10 days ago . The wedding took place on June 22. The photos showed the couple with their three children: Denis (2021), Duarte (2023), and a daughter born in 2024 whose name has not been revealed.
Liverpool footballer, formerly of Atlético
Diogo Jota , 28, joined Liverpool in 2020 from Wolverhampton for €44.7 million. Since then, he has made 182 appearances for the Reds, scoring 65 goals and providing 26 assists . In that time, he has won three titles with the Reds: a Premier League title (2024-25), an FA Cup title (2021-22) , and a League Cup title (2021-22).
The Portuguese international had a brief spell at Atlético Madrid . The Red and Whites signed him from Paços Ferreira in 2016 for 7 million euros. He scored in a 2-0 friendly against Crotone , but never made his official debut. That same summer , he went on loan to Porto. He then went out, also on loan, to Wolverhampton before leaving for a permanent transfer in 2018 for 14 million euros.
