New BVB captain Emre Can: "I want to stay true to myself"

After being appointed BVB captain, football reporter Christina Reinke has talked to Emre Can about the past week, his character and his predecessor Marco Reus.

A new contract and named captain – it's been a good week.

"It's been an extremely good week. First the contract extension, because I feel really at home in Dortmund. I see a lot of potential and I absolutely want to help tap into it. And today I learned that I'm going to be captain of the team. That makes me incredibly proud. It is a great day for me, my family and the people who have been close to me in recent years."

What was the process? Was there a kind of interview?

"I found out today in a conversation with Sebastian Kehl and Edin Terzic. I would like to thank the people in charge at the club for putting their trust in me. I think the interview has been over the past few months. Six months ago, probably no one would have thought that I would be sitting here today, being named the captain of the team. A fair few things have changed over the past few months. It's always about performances."

Have you ever thought about how you want to lead the team?

"No. Even in the past few years, without the captain's armband, I have always been someone who liked to talk on the pitch. I can sometimes be quite loud. I'll keep doing that. I will try to stay true to myself on the pitch and not change much. Instead, I will try to stay as I am. Only now, I'll be wearing the bracelet. It is a great honour to become captain after Marco. I know what it meant to him as a boy from Dortmund. But Marco and I are different people, and that's why I'll be different and go my way."

Have you talked to him and picked up any tips?

"No. But Marco, I think, is also very happy that I became a captain. He congratulated me straight away and told me that he was very happy about the decision."
