Brave New Caledonia fall narrowly in historic FIFA World Cup Play-off

2026 WCQ Intercontinental Play-offs
0-1
Match Report:
New Caledonia’s hopes of qualifying for the FIFA World Cup 2026™ have been extinguished, despite pushing Jamaica all the way in a 1-0 defeat in their Play-off Path A Semi-final in Guadalajara, Mexico.
Making history as the first Melanesian nation to compete in an intercontinental play-off for a FIFA World Cup™, New Caledonia gave it their all and delivered an admirable performance in defeat.
Many expected Les Cagous to struggle, but they proved their ability to compete with a Jamaican outfit ranked 80 places above them on the FIFA World Rankings – only succumbing to a decisive goal from Bailey Cadamarteri inside the first twenty minutes.
Making his international debut for New Caledonia after switching allegiances from France, Angelo Fulgini put an early header over the crossbar as Johann Sidaner’s side showed some initial promise.
Jamaica warmed into the contest though, and it didn’t take long for them to take the initiative. Goalkeeper Rocky Nyikeine could only parry the ball into the path of Bailey Cadamarteri from a free kick effort, and the latter was on hand to score his second international goal and give the Reggae Boyz the lead in the 18th minute.
Despite controlling more of the possession, Jamaica never fully imposed themselves on their lower-ranked opponents. Twice they were almost caught cold, Joseph Athale lifting a long-range effort just over the bar, and Jean-Jacques Katrawa forcing a save from Jamaican captain Andre Blake, after spotting the goalkeeper off his line.
Cadamarteri had the opportunity to score a second for Jamaica just before half-time, but this time Nyikeine was on hand to deny him.
Just one goal down after 45 minutes, New Caledonia continued to harbour hope. Despite continuing to produce moments of potential though, a lack of execution in the final third became apparent.
The Reggae Boyz were able to gain more of a hold on the match as the second half wore on. Karoy Anderson struck wide of the right post from the edge of the box, whilst Ronaldo Webster was denied by Nyikeine in a one-on-one situation.
Johann Sidaner brought Gerard Waia, Germain Haewegene and Shene Welepane into the attack in an effort to re-energise New Caledonia. Waia came close to grabbing the equaliser with four minutes left on the clock, but Blake was on hand to pull off a big save at his near post.
It proved to be New Caledonia’s final opening, as Jamaica held on to secure progression to the FIFA World Cup 2026™ Play-off Path A Final against DR Congo next week.
Whilst defeat marks the end of the road for New Caledonia’s qualifying campaign, they proved gutsy opponents and came incredibly close to upsetting the odds in a performance they can take heart from.
