No Rangers player is safe from axe in summer rebuild, says goalkeeper Liam Kelly

Rangers goalkeeper Liam Kelly admits the axe is hanging over the entire squad ahead of what is expected to be a major summer clearout.

Kelly didn’t hold back in the aftermath of Saturday’s 2-2 draw at St Mirren — hitting out at the ‘empty words’ which have defined another season of failure.

After watching his team twice throw away the lead with another poor performance, Rangers interim boss Barry Ferguson was also unsparing in his assessment.

Ferguson admits the Ibrox club have lost their ‘fear factor’ — and made it clear that players are now playing for their future.

Kelly believes nobody at the club can consider themselves safe ahead of a huge summer rebuild, if and when the US takeover deal is completed.

Asked whether the wholesale changes offer hope for the future, he replied: ‘I wouldn’t say hope. It’s just reality, isn’t it? It’s just what’s needed.

‘We’ve obviously not been good enough this season to win any trophy. We can’t have any complaints because we’ve not been good enough.

‘We need to just deal with it, get on with it, try our very best to improve and give our absolute all in these last four games.

‘If we come up short through technical mistakes, then fair enough. But the least we can do is give our all to the supporters.’

Kelly didn’t mince his words when asked to reflect on Saturday’s performance and, more broadly, on the season as a whole.

‘We were desperate to win the game,’ said the Scotland squad keeper, who has replaced Jack Butland for Rangers over recent weeks.

‘Go ahead twice, and then just sloppy. Give away two terrible goals. Not good enough going forward collectively, not good enough going backwards collectively.

‘Listen, it’s the same all the time, isn’t it? It’s the same story again. So I’m not going to sit here and bore anybody.

‘We weren’t good enough, we didn’t deserve to win the game. Again, nowhere near good enough for what our fans expect and the level that’s needed for this club.

‘Obviously we can still hurt teams. We’ve shown that in certain games. Even in big, big games we’ve shown we can hurt teams.

‘But it doesn’t matter what I say. You’ve heard the same things the whole season. It’s all empty words.

‘No matter what you say, it just seems to happen every week. No matter how aggressive or how angry people get in the building or after games, it needs to change.

‘There needs to be massive changes for us to improve as a team.’
