OFFICIAL: Barcelona end Demir's loan as the player will return to Rapid Vienna

Barcelona have confirmed that Yusuf Demir's loan spell with the Catalans has ended and that he will return to Austrian side Rapid Vienna.

The Austrian winger joined the Catalan giants on a season-long loan deal in July last year with the option of making the move permanent for a fixed £8.3million (€10m) fee.

Had Demir played one more game for Barcelona, the mandatory purchase option would have kicked in. Therefore, Barcelona opted to terminate the 18-year-old's loan spell instead.

Demir performed well during pre-season but failed to make the most of his promise during the early part of the LaLiga season.

The winger failed to record a goal or assist in any of his six league games or three Champions League matches.

Therefore, as previously reported by Sportsmail, Xavi did not see the 18-year-old forming part of the club's future.

As a result, the Austrian international has left Barcelona after featuring in nine games for the Catalan side.

The move continues the clear-out of deadwood in the Barcelona squad, with Philippe Coutinho having joined Aston Villa on loan with a £33m buy option included.

Additionally, the £8.3m saved also helped contribute to Barcelona's ability to finally register Ferran Torres, who joined from Manchester City earlier this month.
