On 21 March, Borussia Dortmund officially announced that the club have extended the contract of their captain Emre Can until June 2027.

Official Statement

Borussia Dortmund and Emre Can will enter their eighth season together this summer. The BVB captain extended his contract, which was due to expire at the end of the season, by another year until June 30, 2027.

Lars Ricken, Borussia Dortmund's sporting director, emphasized: "Emre is our captain and an absolute role model. He's a leader, leads by example, and always puts the team first. It's no coincidence that we said immediately after his serious injury that we wanted to continue supporting him, because he's a key player for Borussia Dortmund. Now it's important for Emre to focus entirely on his recovery, and then we'll be delighted when he returns to the pitch."

Can is currently sidelined due to injury. At the end of February, the defensive specialist suffered a torn cruciate ligament in the match against Bayern Munich and will be out for several more months. The 48-time German international underwent successful surgery last week. Since Borussia Dortmund initially signed the 32-year-old on loan from Juventus in January 2020 and then permanently, Can has made 220 competitive appearances and won the DFB Cup with the Black and Yellow in 2021. Due to his injury, Can will not return to action until next season.

"Emre is an important part of us, both on and off the pitch. We know his significance in the dressing room and the experience he brings to our team. We will closely support him on his road to recovery and have complete confidence that he will return in top form," said BVB Sporting Director Sebastian Kehl.

Emre Can said: "I am delighted to continue being a part of Borussia Dortmund. BVB is a special club and I would like to sincerely thank everyone for their support. My goal is to get healthy again as quickly as possible, to be back on the pitch with my teammates, and to be successful with the club."
