Fulham have announced the last-minute signing of Liverpool winger Lazar Markovic on a free transfer until the end of the season.

The 24-year-old Serbian was a £20m signing from Benfica in 2014 and last made a first team appearance for the Reds in 2015 after failing to settle on Merseyside.

He was out of contract at the end of the season but Claudio Ranieri has opted to bring Markovic in to help Fulham try and avoid Premier League relegation.

The Cottagers submitted a deal sheet to the Premier League at the eleventh hour on Thursday night but the move was finally announced just after midnight.

Fulham chief Tony Khan said in a club statement: 'Lazar Markovic is a gifted young player; we're pleased to welcome him from Liverpool for the remainder of the season.

'Lazar is known as a great teammate, he has the support of our Manager, and he has the talent to strengthen our attack. Come on Fulham!'

Fulham also claimed they had 'received very good recommendations from Aleksandar Mitrovic regarding the player.'

Liverpool tweeted: 'Everyone at #LFC wishes Lazar all the best at his new club.'

Markovic made 34 appearances under Brendan Rodgers in his campaign at Anfield before falling down the pecking order.

He has since had four loan spells across four different countries at Fenerbahce, Sporting Lisbon, Hull City and Anderlecht.

Markovic had been banished to train with the Liverpool under-23s at the Kirkby Academy since he rejected a move to Anderlecht last August.

Liverpool had thrashed out a £2.9million deadline day deal with the Belgium outfit, as well as a 50% sell-on clause, but he failed to agree personal terms.
