In the second round of the Premier League on Sunday night, Manchester United faced Ipswich at home. Maguire created an own goal in the 56th minute after a deflection off Ipswich defender Greaves, helping Manchester United take a 2-1 lead.
Before this goal, Maguire touched the ball with his hand while contending for possession, then shot from the edge of the box. The ball deflected off Ipswich defender Greaves and into the net. This goal was credited as an own goal to Greaves and was confirmed valid by VAR.
According to the new IFAB rules adopted by the Premier League for the 2026-27 season, because the ball clearly deviated from the goal line but was touched or handled by a defending player resulting in an own goal, the own goal was ruled valid. VAR confirmed the goal as Greaves' own goal when reviewing the replay.
OFFICIAL STATEMENT:
The referee’s call of goal for Manchester United was checked and confirmed by VAR – with it deemed that Maguire was not the immediate goalscorer after an accidental handball.
VAR: “It's an own goal and the accidental handball is not punishable, so we recommend you award the goal.”
