AS Roma announce the signing of Renato Sanches from Paris Saint-Germain in a loan deal with an obligation to buy if certain conditions are met.

However, the Portuguese midfielder has only joined the Giallorossi on loan with an option to buy whereas the Argentine sealed a permanent move. Both players arrived this Tuesday at Rome’s Ciampino Airport. According to Fabrizio Romano, Sanches’ loan move will cost José Mourinho’s side €1m and includes an optional purchase clause worth €15m. The Italian reporter understands that, should Sanches features in 60% of the Giallorossi’s games across the season, the deal will be automatically made permanent.

Sanches only signed for PSG last summer for a fee of €15m from Lille, with whom he had won a shock Ligue 1 title in 2021 under the guidance of Christopher Galtier. The former Bayern Munich man’s debut season with the French champions was hampered by frequent injuries. The Portuguese international only made 27 appearances for Les Parisiens last season, scoring two goals. The Euro 2016 winner with Portugal remains under contract with PSG until 2027. Sanches will wear the #20 jersey with AS Roma.

“I’m so happy to have joined this huge club,” stated Renato. “The Roma project really won me over and I feel that playing here is the right choice for me.

“It’s so important for any player to feel the support of the fans. For me on my first day, the impact that I felt helped me understand how much these supporters love the team and that can only drive me forward to give my all to achieve success here.”

The 25-year-old midfielder was part of the Portugal side (alongside Rui Patricio) that claimed European glory in 2016, becoming the youngest starter in the history of the Euros and the youngest goalscorer of all time in the knockout phase.

Sanches’s career has also included spells at Benfica, Bayern Munich, Swansea and Lille, while he has 32 senior Portugal caps to his name in which he has found the net on three occasions.

"Renato Sanches is a player that we’ve been following for a long time,” admitted Tiago Pinto, Roma’s General Manager, Football. “Despite that, he’s still a young player and he’s developed the habit of achieving success in every competition, both at club and international level.

“Renato has the technical and physical qualities that should see him slot seamlessly into our midfield, making it even more competitive.”

The Portuguese is set to wear the number 20 jersey.
