Hi all, welcome to All Football's On This Day! Let's find out what happened today (April 28th) in football history. If you have more stories and news that happened on this day in history, feel free to post them in the comment area and share them with AFers.

On this day in 2010 - Inter were defeated 1-0 by Barca but reach UCL Final

Inter's heroic 10 men earned a Champions League final meeting against Bayern Munich despite a 1-0 defeat to Barcelona in a pulsating semi-final second leg which saw the Nerazzurri's Thiago Motta sent off in the 28th minute.

After constant home pressure, but only one shot on target, Gerard Pique finally broke the deadlock on 84 minutes, but it was not enough to overturn Inter's 3-1 first leg victory.

The Nerazzurri saw very little of the ball in the opening stages, with Barca dominating possession and the visitors happy enough to sit back on their two-goal advantage.

With Sergio Busquets harrying Thiago Motta, the ex-Barca man held out a flat hand, and upon making contact with the Spaniard’s face his opponent went to the ground.

To the amazement of the Inter player, and everyone on the away bench, referee Frank De Bleeckere produced a straight red card for perceived violent conduct.

On this day in 1970 - Atletico boss Simeone was born

In his club career that started in 1987, Simeone won a domestic double with Atlético Madrid in 1996, and the UEFA Cup with Inter in 1998, also winning another domestic double with Lazio in 2000, as well as the 1999 UEFA Super Cup and the 2000 Supercoppa Italiana.

Simeone was capped over 100 times for the Argentina national team and represented the country at the 1994, 1998 and 2002 FIFA World Cups, and in four editions of the Copa América, winning the tournament in 1991 and 1993. He also won the FIFA Confederations Cup in 1992, and a silver medal at the 1996 Summer Olympic games.

As a manager, Simeone has coached Argentine sides Racing Club, Estudiantes de La Plata, River Plate, San Lorenzo and Italian club Catania before joining Spanish club Atlético Madrid in 2011. He won the Argentine Primera División both with Estudiantes and River Plate, and has had his biggest managerial success with Atletico Madrid, winning the La Liga, the Copa del Rey, two UEFA Europa Leagues, two UEFA Super Cups, and also being the runners-up of the UEFA Champions League twice.

On this day in 1988 - Man Utd midfielder Mata was born

As a graduate of Real Madrid's youth academy, Mata played for Real Madrid Castilla in 2006–07, before joining Valencia in the summer of 2007. He became an integral part of the club's midfield, making 174 appearances over the course of four seasons.

In August 2011, Mata signed for English club Chelsea of the Premier League for a fee believed to be in the region of €28 million, and in his debut season was part of the team that won the UEFA Champions League and the FA Cup. The following year, Chelsea won the UEFA Europa League, making Mata and teammate Fernando Torres the first players to hold the Champions League, Europa League, World Cup, and the European Championships simultaneously.

After falling out of favour at Chelsea under José Mourinho, Mata was sold to Manchester United in January 2014, for a fee of £37.1 million.

Mata is a Spanish international, having represented Spain at under-16, under-17, under-19, under-20, under-21, Olympic and senior levels. He played for the under-20 side in the 2007 FIFA U-20 World Cup. In June 2009, Mata played at the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup, his first senior tournament.

On 9 September 2009, Mata scored his first goal for the senior team, against Estonia, securing the nation a place at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, and was part of Spain's World Cup-winning squad. In 2011, he went back to playing in the under-21 side, helping Spain win the 2011 UEFA European Under-21 Football Championship in Denmark.

He won the Golden Player award and was part of the Team of the Tournament. Mata returned to the senior squad for UEFA Euro 2012 and, after coming on as a substitute, scored Spain's fourth goal in the final as Spain defeated Italy 4–0 to retain their title as champions of Europe.

On this day in 2013 - Arsenal drew 1-1 with Man Utd

Six days after winning the title, Robin van Persie returned to the Emirates with a guard of honour.

Theo Walcott gave Arsenal the lead before Robin van Persie levelled for Man United via a penalty.

On this day in 1970 - The Gunners Fire Back In Europe

On 28 April 1970, Arsenal rallied from a 3-1 first-leg deficit to win the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup over Anderlecht with an aggregate score of 3-4.

For the first leg on 22 April, they visited Anderlecht, where the hosts dominated, taking a 3-0 lead before an 82nd-minute goal from Ray Kennedy brought the final margin to a slightly more respectable 3-1.

In London for the second leg, the situation was reversed. Arsenal went up 1-0 with a 25th-minute goal from Eddie Kelly, while their defense stymied the previously-prolific Belgian attack. Radford then struck in the 75th minute, followed by a goal from Jon Sammels one minute later. That was enough to push the final scoreline to 3-4 on aggregate, giving Arsenal their first European trophy.

The victory inspired the squad, who regained their domestic form the following season, winning both the league and the FA Cup.
