Andre Onana has confirmed his imminent move to Manchester United ahead of the club's announcement.

The Inter Milan goalkeeper agreed terms with the Red Devils over the weekend, and is set to be handed a five-year contract with the option for another year to extend his stay at Old Trafford until 2029.

United will pay an initial fee of £43.7million for the Cameroon international, plus potentially another £3.4m in add-ons, in a deal worth up to £47.1m.

Onana was spotted arriving at Milan airport on Tuesday, where he took a flight to Birmingham ahead of his Man United medical.

But both the player and the club have been tight-lipped on the transfer, until Onana shared his thoughts on the move with Gazetta dello Sport.

'The important thing is to be honest and always tell people the truth,' the former Ajax keeper said. 'I am a person who always wants new challenges.

'Playing in the Premier League and for a club like United is irresistible. All parties wanted this to happen.

'But what matters is that, even if I had stayed, I would have been equally happy because I never had any problems at Inter. Indeed, a magic was born in Milan that is almost difficult to explain.'

When asked on how he felt about following in the footsteps of storied Man United goalkeepers such as Peter Schmeichel, Edwin van de Sar, and David de Gea, Onana added: 'Being chosen to continue this tradition makes me proud and responsible: I want to win trophies with my new companions.'

Man United have been looking for a new No 1 since deciding not to extend De Gea's 12-year career at Old Trafford.

The Spaniard left as a free agent at the end of June, after head coach Erik ten Hag insisted he wanted a goalkeeper who was stronger with the ball at his feet.

The move will see a reunion between Onana and Ten Hag, who previously managed the player's rise from Ajax's youth team to the starting XI.

The 27-year-old only joined Inter Milan from the Eredivisie side in the summer of 2022, but quickly made his mark at the San Siro, spurring the side on to victories in the Coppa Italia and the Supercoppa Italiana, as well as featuring in Inter's Champions League final against Manchester City.

Ten Hag will hope that Onana's visa is processed at pace, to make sure that the goalkeeper can join the squad on their upcoming US tour.

Man United will fly to the States on Wednesday in preparation for pre-season ties against Arsenal, Real Madrid, and Borussia Dortmund across the pond.

Onana's move could now spark a domino effect through the club's goalkeeping ranks.

A loan player last season, Dean Henderson is set to book a permanent £20m transfer to Nottingham Forest with the confirmation of the new No 1, and 37-year-old veteran Tom Heaton could also be moved on.

Heaton signed a one-year contract extension at Old Trafford to combat a looming crisis between the sticks, but could yet sign for Premier League newcomers Luton should Man United be successful in their pursuit of talented J-League goalkeeper Zion Suzuki.

With Onana's signature assured, Man United will now focus their efforts on securing their number one attacking target, Rasmus Hojlund.

The club are thought to have agreed personal terms with the Atalanta youngester, but there is said to be a chasm between Man United's valuation of the Denmark international and the Serie A side's £86m price tag.
