Onana handed brutal truth by ex-Man Utd star as Amorim given perfect replacement

Manchester United are overhauling their squad in the summer transfer window after a dismal season and Ruben Amorim has been told to show no mercy to Andre Onana

Manchester United should take a brutal approach with Andre Onana and not hesitate to replace him in the summer transfer window. That’s the opinion of former United goalkeeper Ben Foster, who believes that a much better player could be available from a Premier League rival this summer.

Onana has failed to live up to his billing since joining United in a £47million transfer from Inter Milan in the summer of 2023. The Cameroon international was signed by Erik ten Hag, who worked with him at Ajax, but his two-season stint at the club has been defined by high-profile blunders.

He was one of many players to underperform during United’s dreadful 2024/25 campaign, keeping just nine clean sheets in 34 Premier League appearances as they finished 15th. Ruben Amorim dropped him for Altay Bayindir after two shocking errors in the 2-2 draw against Lyon in April and Onana faces an uncertain future.

United reportedly considered a move for Aston Villa star Emi Martinez in January before sticking with Onana. But they have remained in touch with the Argentina goalkeeper and could move for him this summer, with Villa perhaps needing to sell to meet profit and sustainability rules after missing out on Champions League qualification.

That would be a wise decision, according to Foster, who told talkSPORT: “It's a brutal league, the Premier League, and I kind of think [over] the last two seasons that he hasn't done enough to prove that he is a Manchester United number one.

“I think he's got ability, and like so many other Man United players, he'd go elsewhere and probably flourish. I think that's probably going to be the case with him as well. If the opportunity does come to sign somebody like Emi Martinez, they've got to go for it. He's still one of the best goalkeepers in the world.

“A lot of people said this season, probably not up to the standard of the previous two years, but still one of the best goalkeepers in the world.

HAVE YOUR SAY! Should Manchester United replace Andre Onana? Comment below.

“You've got to have a strong spine in any football team. If you get the goalie right, you get a couple of strikers in, Bruno's going to be staying now. It's a great start to the transfer window for them.”

United captain Bruno Fernandes has turned down a gigantic contract at Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal to stay put at Old Trafford. But several other players are set to leave in the summer transfer window, with Amorim clear that an overhaul is needed to turn things around.

The club are willing to listen to offers for any of their players, with Alejandro Garnacho the subject of interest from Napoli, while Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Antony are also on the transfer list. United have made a positive start to the window by lining up a £62.5m deal for Wolves forward Matheus Cunha and are also trying to sign Brentford star Bryan Mbeumo.
