Only Messi has been involved in more league goals than Chelsea new boy Werner

Chelsea fans are salivating after Timo Werner became the latest man to join Frank Lampard's Blues revolution and it's easy to see why.

Lampard has been desperate to bolster his attacking options and has landed one of the finest strikers in Europe in Werner, with his £53m move completed on Thursday.

The Germany international, who has two games left to play with RB Leipzig, has signed a five-year deal worth £175,000 a week.

And those who were perhaps unaware of his talents are quickly discovering what all the fuss is about.

The £53m fee for Werner is viewed as a bargain in a market where top goalscorers are increasingly hard to come by.

The 24-year-old began his career at Stuttgart, coming through the academy before becoming their youngest ever player and goalscorer at the age of 17.

Werner would demonstrate his potential, contributing 14 goals and 11 assists in three seasons before joining Leipzig for a then club record fee of £8m.

It was here that he would really make his name and his numbers will surely excite every Chelsea fan.

The German's devastating strike against Fortuna Dusseldorf on Wednesday night was his 32nd of the season across all competitions, with 26 of those coming in the Bundesliga.

That total puts him third in the race for the European Golden Boot, with only Robert Lewandowski (31) and Ciro Immobile (27) ahead of him.

And Werner's game is not just about goals.

The forward is a creative force as well with 13 assists to his name already this season. That means he has had a hand in 45 goals in just 43 appearances this term.

In fact, across Europe's top leagues only Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi has been directly involved in more league goals this campaign, one ahead of Werner on 35.

And Werner is certainly no flat track bully either.

No player in Europe has managed more away goals than his tally of 15 and when it comes to decisive strikes, he is the Bundesliga's most proficient.

He may have five less than Lewandowski but his goals have earned more points for his side, 16 in total to his rival's 14.

The way Werner scores his goals is also impressive - the striker is able to make them for himself rather than simply act as a poacher.

Fifteen of his 34 goal involvements have come following a ball carry, three more than any other player from Europe's top five leagues.

The new Chelsea hitman has also delivered at international level with 11 goals in 29 games since his debut for Germany back in 2017.

With statistics like these, it's no wonder Lampard went all out to make Werner his second signing of the summer.
