Despite a tumultuous season both on and off the pitch, Paris Saint-Germain have successfully defended their Ligue 1 title, having clinched a record-breaking 11th Ligue 1 with a draw in Strasbourg on the penultimate matchday on Saturday evening.
For manager Christophe Galtier, it’s a second league win of his managerial career, after beating PSG to the title two years ago with Lille. Nevertheless, reports indicate that the club are set on replacing him over the summer, with a near-disastrous spell of form since the turn of the year seeing the team crash out of the Champions League and Coupe de France early on, and stumble to the finish line in the league.
Speaking after the draw in Alsace, Galtier explained that he believed he deserved to see out his two-year contract, notably pointing out that the World Cup had affected the team’s season, as had long-term injuries to important players such as Neymar and Presnel Kimpembe. As reported by RMC, the manager also pointed out that he had gone through a difficult time personally as well, amid accusations of racism dating back from his time at Nice last year.
“I personally believe that I deserve to continue. Why do I deserve it? Because I’ve given my all this season, with a lot of energy. We were able to stay on track during some very, very difficult moments, whether that’s professionally or personally.”
“The correct analysis, which you [journalists] don’t want to carry out, is that there was a pre-World Cup PSG and a post-World Cup PSG, with very important players who in some cases haven’t been playing for 16-17 games.”
