Paris Saint-Germain have this afternoon announced that Neymar’s ankle surgery in Doha was a success, with the Brazilian now set for a long-term recovery that will keep him out of action until the end of the season.
The 31-year-old suffered ankle ligament damage in the 4-3 win over Lille last month, having already sustained an issue in the same area during Brazil’s World Cup campaign. This time, PSG’s medical team recommended an operation to reduce the risk of recurring issues, which several external experts have confirmed. According to L’Équipe, an immediate surgery on his right ankle was considered after his 2017 medical, but that option was discarded given the high-profile nature of his record-breaking transfer.
Neymar’s spell on the sidelines could last up to four months, which would delay his return to PSG’s pre-season in July. He remains under contract with the club for another four years after this summer, and reports indicate that he has no intention of leaving the French capital – although sporting advisor Luís Campos would not be against his departure.
